Apnea is defined as a period of not breathing. There are
three types of apnea that exist:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
- Central Sleep Apnea
- Mixed Sleep Apnea
The most common of the three types is obstructive apnea,
which is caused by blockage of the airway occurring when
soft tissues in the throat collapse and close during sleep.
Symptoms include snoring, choking sensations, early
morning headaches, exhaustion, sexual dysfunction and
memory problems. Apnea is typically diagnosed through
a 1 or 2 night in-lab sleep study with interpretation by a
sleep study physician.
The most common treatment for apnea is a nasal mask worn
while sleeping. Dental appliances are also commonly used
for mild apnea cases. To help you determine if you may
be suffering from a form of apnea, we invite you to take our
