About Sleep Studies

To properly diagnose a sleep disorder, the most effective
tool is the all-night sleep study. A typical sleep study entails
the patient coming into our offices in the late evening where
they will meet with one of our sleep technologists who will
go over the sleep study with them.
For the duration of the study, the patient will have electrodes
applied to the scalp, sides of the head and under the chin,
chest and leg to allow us to measure brain waves, heart
rate and eye movements. A sensor is placed by the nose
and mouth to measure airflow. Belts are placed around
the rib cage and abdomen for measurement of breathing
movements. A clip is also placed on the finger to monitor
blood oxygen levels. All of these measurement tools are
monitored by the sleep technologist in a seperate room
to gather the necessary data for the sleep interpretation
by the physician. All of our sleep studies take place in
our comfortably appointed sleep rooms that include a
regular hotel style bed, tv, nightstand and full bath. The
study concludes in the early morning hours and results are
typically ready in 7-10 days.
